Food Stylist Q & A

How long have you been a food stylist? I have been styling food for 10 years. I have been a professional cook for more than 20 years and I think that has given me an edge on production of food displays.

Who are some of your more recognizable clients? Oscar Mayer, Kraft Foods, The Hershey Company, Omaha Steaks, Tyson Foods, Jimmy Dean and King Arthur Flour are some of the more prominent brands I have styled for.

What did you do before you were a stylist? I've sported many hats beginning as a computer operator, cook, caterer and recently I've studied refrigeration repair.

What initially attracted you to food styling? Learning to cook, I liked the culinary position of Garde Manger, mostly the food presentations and I found it to be an outlet for artistic expression.

How did you start your career as a food stylist? After graduating from a Hospitality and Tourism program, I sought a position that would put my affinity for food presentations to work at a local televised shopping channel in their culinary department.

What do you like best about being a food stylist? I like the challenge to put forth my client's objective that conveys their product in the best possible visual perspective.

Who are some of your favorite food photographers? Richard Riley, www.riley-productions.com, is my favorite professional photographer that I've worked with and I learned a lot from him. I had worked with other local photographer's and never saw results as professional as Richards. Most of my work has been involved with infomercial and commercial productions in video format. I admire Michael Ray's photography, http://www.michaelray.com, as well as his support in promoting the food stylists' industry with www.foodportfolio.com website directory.

What's your favorite food to style? Family style food presentations; large platters that contain full size servings of comfort foods.

Do you have a specialty? Most of my experience is with infomercial cookware or culinary products, pressure cooker's, blender's and specialty ovens to name a few. I am interested in still photography and I am working towards moving more in that direction.

What's the key to being a good stylist? Capturing the client's vision for their product is my ultimate goal.

What do I find the most challenging being a food stylist? Many times I have to be creative with solutions to problems. In the photo below, the Beef Ribs I bought needed to be cut in order to fit into the cooker for an infomercial.
